Education

Working closely with the Ministry of Health, PACAM has established and supported Standardised and Accredited Training in Palliative Care.  This involves developing palliative care training for different cadres.  Training guidelines and an accrediting system will ensure that this training is of a high standard.

To date there are twelve health professionals in Malawi with postgraduate qualifications in palliative care and five more currently in post graduate study.

In 2007 palliative care training for health care workers was standardised and accredited.  Over 700 health professionals have received an introduction to palliative care through this 5-day course.

Palliative Care learning objectives have been incorporated into the undergraduate medical curriculum.

PACAM’s ongoing role in palliative care education is in monitoring standards and acting as a supportive resource for the trainers.  PACAM will play an advisory role to those responsible for curriculum planning for other cadres of health professionals, and has drafted a curriculum for CHBC training for community volunteers which is currently being tested. PACAM is also currently involved in a project which seeks to integrate Palliative Care into the pre-service curriculum.
