Maya Jane Bates

As a primary care clinician, Jane spent over 20 years in clinical, academic and research leadership focusing on palliative care and primary care development in Blantyre, Malawi (Southern Africa). During this time she authored Inspiring Hope: a palliative care handbook for churches in Africa with support from EMMS International (2013). Her PhD at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine explored the potential for palliative care to deliver improved wellbeing and cost savings for households in Malawi. She is currently working on policy and contextual facilitators and barriers for future health system financing for palliative care in Malawi and Nepal within Universal Health Coverage.

Jane serves as a Primary Care Expert on WHO Technical Advisory Group on Integrated Care (2022-present). Board Member for the Palliative Care Support Trust (2005-present), International Association of Hospice and Palliative Care (2022-present). Fellow, Advance Higher Education (UK) (2019). Honorary Senior Lecturer, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences and University of Cape Town.

Recent international mentorship and research consultancies in Nepal (University of Edinburgh 2023-2025), India (Compassionate Leadership Fellowship Faculty member 2024-5), Gaza (teaching faculty 2018) and Malawi (ongoing).
